  SELF-MANAGEMENT SUPPORT ALLIANCE
Introduction to GSMSA

Global Self Management Support Alliance is an international network of self management support promotion, comprised by health care institutions, research teams, policy makers, health care providers and patients. At the webpage www.globalalliancesms.org it is the official web of the Alliance, that it was presented on the 2nd Chronic Care Congress, held in Alexandria, United States, on the last Jue 3rd 2008.

Its aim is to facilitate the collaborative work among their members globally and to help instit utions and individuals to develop their own self management programs under the criteria of the GSMA´s Quality Assurance Framework.

Evidence body

Self Management support has been proposed as one of the key actions to develop the new Chronic Care Model by the World Health Organization. There are different kind of interventions, at the practice office level, lead by health providers or others such as the Chronic Disease Self Management Programme (CDSMP), lead by patients with chronic diseases.

Although more than 50 clinical trials have been carry out in the last 10-15 years, strong evidence is lacking about the risk-benefit balance to implement this kinds of interventions as a regular service on the health care systems. Working basically with volunteers, differences between US-Europe people and not standarized outcome measures are some of the reasons for this research/clinical gap.
