  SELF-MANAGEMENT

The World Health Organization recommends the education in Self-Management to prevent ant treat long-term illnesses. The New Model of Improving Illness Chronic Care promotes the support in Self-Management because it makes the patient feels:

  • the main responsible of his health.
  • he learns to cope with his illness better.
  • he wishes and learns to acquire and keep healthy habits.
  • he relies on the fact that he can feel better what so ever the seriousness of his illness would be.

These objectives are pretended to be attained in close collaboration with medical professionals and the rest of people (carers, family) who are in charge of helping them. The traditional medical education is mainly focused to provide medical information orally or in written form. For that reason, we are facing a different focus. In addition, Self-Management has been proved as an efficient way to reduce medical cost by helping to diminish the amount of admissions in hospitals and consultations at the accident and emergency department and promoting a more rational use of medication and an improvement of the doctor-patient relationship.
